The Quiet Times

Illustrating Innovation in Small Business

It is the nature of innovation that forces one, at times, to drop out of the public eye and focus solely on creating. These are largely quiet times: inundated by idea generation, trial-and-error experimentation, and productive failure sparking organic education. This is especially true of the small artisanal company.

When quiet times come around for small businesses, it’s quite apparent – communication is sparse; presence in sparse at community events; social media activity dies down. People may ask, “What’s going on?”

The seeming lull is simply energy being focused inside the company. The goal is to create an exciting new product or system that will improve the organization as a whole and better serve the community. Just like a living organism, as the business grows, phases of recurring activity emerge and form cycles. These cycles keep its systems alive, thriving, and growing. Each step in the process brings some form of change and new life to it. The quietest of these phases, for the small business, is innovation.

The quiet times are necessary for innovation, and innovation sparks growth. They are just as significant as the exciting periods, most people just don’t know to look for them.

“So, what’s going on with Turning Point?”

I reply to this with a glimmer in my eye. This is when you know that something big is on the way. All I can say is keep your eyes peeled, and start getting excited!

Time goes on and Turning Point is continues to grow. The cycles that energize our systems and push us forward are hard at work. We’ve been spreading excitement, pride, and joy to many people with our meaningful, artisanal pens. Some are heirloom items that carry family stories within them. Some are given proudly as luxury gifts by those who wanted to impress and show appreciation. Some help commemorate special moments and stand-out achievements. It’s been a whirlwind of positive emotions and penmaking.

We’re excited to learn and grow at Turning Point Pen Company. Our adaptive and creative culture encourages phases of creative reflection and innovation, especially after times of intense activity. So when the sanding dust settled, we started innovating.

Remember, the quiet times are just as significant as the exciting ones. Most people just don’t know to look for them.

So get excited – there are lots of fun things are on the way for Turning Point!
